As  more and more people wake up to the concept of accessible web sites, is there a need for official accessibility certification?  <\/p>\n<p>I like the idea of accessibility certification.  In fact, I quite like the idea of web designer\/developer certification.  Of course, liking the idea and turning it in to useful reality are two different things.  <\/p>\n<p>How can you determine a web designer&#8217;s accessibility expertise?  I always think the best way is to ask them to submit a site for review.  I&#8217;d then run their site thru my gamut of accessibility testing tools <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Test with my browser &#8211; turn off images, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use the mouse, turn off speakers, increase font size, change window size, turn off CSS, turn off Javascript, set to greyscale<\/li>\n<li>Run online accessibility tests on representative pages using more than one tool, example:  <a href=\"http:\/\/webxact.watchfire.com\/\">WebXact<\/a> &#038; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wave.webaim.org\/index.jsp\">Wave<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Listen to representative pages using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/fs_products\/JAWS_HQ.asp\">JAWS<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Run a sitewide accessibility report tool like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usablenet.com\/products_services\/lift_machine\/lift_machine.html\">LIFT<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watchfire.com\/products\/webxm\/default.aspx\">WebXM<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Conduct hands on accessibility testing with users who have visual, auditory, motor, speech and cognitive disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But, if I didn&#8217;t have accessibility expertise and needed to rely on someone else&#8217;s opinion, where could I turn?  With a little help from my friends, a few places I could think of were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainbench.com\/\">Brainbench<\/a> &#8211; Web Accessibility Certification<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gawds.org\/listmembers.php\">Gawds.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Winners of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowbility.org\/main\/\">Knowbility <\/a>Accessibility Internet Rallies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Right now, I&#8217;m just wanting to know if you think accessibility certification for web designers has merit or not.
