There is something incredibly satisifying about kicking down barriers to information.  I&#8217;m inspired by the goals of the W3C, &#8220;Web for everyone.  Web on everything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, I wanted to share my own practical accessibility practice.  When asked to test a site for accessibility, these are the steps that Glenda the Goodwitch takes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Validate<\/strong> &#8211; make sure the site validates by using the <a href=\"http:\/\/validator.w3.org\/\">html validator<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jigsaw.w3.org\/css-validator\/\">css validator<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Test with my browser<\/strong> &#8211; turn off images, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use the mouse, turn off speakers, increase font size, change window size.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test with toolbars <\/strong>&#8211; (<a href=\"http:\/\/chrispederick.com\/work\/webdeveloper\/\">Web Developer Extension<\/a> &#038; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visionaustralia.org.au\/ais\/toolbar\/\">Web Accessibility Toolbar<\/a>) turn off CSS, turn off Javascript, set to Greyscale, display structure (headings, lists\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Run online accessibility tests<\/strong> on representative pages<br \/>\nuse more than one tool, example:  <a href=\"http:\/\/webxact.watchfire.com\/\">WebXact<\/a> &#038; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wave.webaim.org\/\">Wave<\/a> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to a few pages <\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/fs_downloads\/jaws.asp\">JAWS<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www-3.ibm.com\/able\/solution_offerings\/hpr.html\">HomePage Reader<\/a> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Run a sitewide accessibility report<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usablenet.com\/products_services\/lift_machine\/lift_machine.html\">LIFT<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watchfire.com\/products\/webxm\/default.aspx\">WebXM<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hands on accessibility testing<\/strong> with Users who have disabilities<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now I&#8217;d like to hear from you.
