Little did I know that today was his 1st Birthday.  <\/p>\n<p>About half-way through lunch our conversation went like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nJohn: &#8220;Today is my second 1st Birthday&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p>Glenda (clearly puzzled): &#8220;It is?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John:  &#8220;Yes, one year ago today I received my bone marrow transplant. So today is my re-birthday.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(see <a href=\"http:\/\/leukemialetters.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/celebrating-peters-birthdays.html\">John&#8217;s blog post from 8\/22\/2006<\/a>, one year ago today.)<\/p>\n<p>Hard to believe a year has passed.  John is doing well.  He is coming back this fall to campus to teach a class.  And while there are still many challenges he faces, he remains ever so brave and full of hope and positive energy.  <\/p>\n<p>Reminds me of a quote from Richard Bach&#8217;s, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Theres-such-place-far-away\/dp\/0440087805\/ref=ed_oe_h\/104-8030231-1256758?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1187828382&#038;sr=8-1\">There&#8217;s No Such Place as Far Away<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nGifts of tin and glass,<br \/>\nWear out in a day<br \/>\nAnd are gone\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While true friendship is a treasure that lasts forever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"imgdeco\"><img src=\"\/images\/first.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Today I had lunch with a dear friend, John Slatin.
